The following candidates supported amending the U.S. Constitution to make clear that corporations and other artificial entities do not have Constitutional rights and that money is not speech and campaign spending should be limited through regulation. If elected, they pledged to use their office to support the Movement to Amend the Constitution.

Arguably, a good first step at getting big money out of our local politics in Sarasota County is to elect our County Commissioners by single member districts. The people of Sarasota County worked extremely hard to collect over 15,000 signatures to put an initiative on the November 2018 ballot to change the way the voters of Sarasota County elect their County Commissioners. Currently, the County Commissioners are elected at large and it takes a lot of money to fund a countywide campaign. If the voters pass the single member districts amendment the candidates for County Commission will be voted on by the voters of his or her district. The idea is that a candidate can reach the voters of a district with significantly less money than would be needed in a countywide race. Therefore, a candidate does not need to be dependent on large special interest contributions to be a viable candidate and get his or her message to the voters.

As a member of the Charter Review Board, I would voice the concern that many voters have regarding big special interest money in politics and the negative impacts it has on our elections and subsequently our daily lives. Questions to consider are: what have other municipalities done to accomplish the goal of getting big special interest money out of local campaigns and how effective has it been at accomplishing the goal of getting big money out of politics at the local level?

I will use my public office to end corporate constitutional rights and big business, by first raising money from the people I represent.
